Welcome Home - Living Room

Welcome to the least used room in our house! I figured I would start a home tour from the front door, so here is our living room. My favorite part of this room is the big bay window that overlooks our front yard. This room was covered in carpet, as you can see in the photos, and was painted a weird off white yellowish color - not pretty. So the first thing we did when we moved in was paint - that’s pretty much what we did in all of the rooms. Since we knew we would be ripping up all the carpet, we didn’t care what it looked like or if we had any paint spills. We also took down the heinous decor and spray painted the fireplace black.

Once we ripped the carpet out, we also removed all of the old baseboards and replaced them with a newer style. This is a time consuming job since it is so detail oriented, but definitely something that can be done on your own with a miter saw and a nail gun. John alsoinstalled a stair banister. I hated not having one and worried about the kids jumping off the stairs and landing on top of the tv. The stairs also got a paint job. I heavily debated between black and white for a few days, drove John crazy and ended up trusting my gut and going with black - and I love the way they turned out.

We have a super small foyer with a small coat closet that was having a hard time fitting all of our coats, shoes, etc. so we decided to add some decorative wainscoting and hooks on the back side of the living room. This was basically dead space that housed nothing so I figured it would be perfect. We bought one giant sheet of MDF board and had it cut at Home Depot. We then hung it on the wall and painted it white so it looked like it was built in. We added some hooks and voila, the perfect drop and go zone for the kiddos. I still want to get a new bench for this area - this one seems way too small, but it does the trick for now.

Here’s another look at the other side of the living room. The armoire currently houses all of the kids hats, gloves, basically crap that I haven’t figured out a better spot for yet.

This room isn’t necessarily my style anymore but overall I’m happy with how little it cost to improve it from what it was. I bought a few decor pieces but paint, new baseboards and the banister were really all it cost for us to transform this space. Speaking of paint, this room was painted with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint in the color “Agreeable Gray”. Let me know if you have any questions, and as always I’ve linked everything I could find at the end of this post.
